5 Ways to Celebrate Winter Solstice with Your Family!

By Skye Vaillancourt December 21, 2020

Winter Solstice marks when the sun travels its shortest path, making nighttime last longer than the day. Winter Solstice is today, December 21st, which also is the beginning of Yule! Listed below are a few ways you and your family can celebrate both holidays.

1. Watch a Movie by The Yule Log

Yule logs are lit on the Winter Solstice and kept lit all night. Some write wishes and burn them with the log. Do this with your family, then watch your favorite holiday movie by the fire!

2. Decorate with Wintry Décor

Take some time to spruce up your home with items from nature! Use plants like holly and mistletoe to decorate with. You can find instructions on how to make a holly wreath here.

3. Make Paper Snowflakes and Other Crafts

Today is a day to celebrate winter, but also the approach of longer days and more light. Spend time with your children crafting! Cut out paper snowflakes, make paper lanterns, or suncatchers.

4. Write a Family Gratitude List

It's always nice to say what we're grateful for at the end of the year. With how 2020 has gone, it is especially important. Gather your family together and have each member list a few things they are grateful for. Make a list of them and hang it up for everyone to see!

5. Have Dinner by Candlelight

Many people celebrate Winter Solstice by using only candlelight; if that's too much for you, then just have a candlelit dinner! Some popular foods are butternut squash, soup, Brussel sprouts, and other seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Although, Winter Solstice is just one day, Yule does not end until January 1st so you and your family have plenty of time for these activities!
